Immigration Reform 2013 – New Immigration Law

President Obama indicated that he wanted comprehensive immigration reform in 2013 that includes a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented people in the U.S.  Some Republicans have indicated that they want to avoid a path to U.S. to citizenship because it is amnesty, and also seem to be against comprehensive reform, favoring a piecemeal approach.  It appears President Obama’s approach would include fines, payment of back taxes and other obstacles.

A bipartisan group is discussing the specifics of reform and President Obama plans to address the issue in his State of the Union.  Michael Bennet of Colorado is part of the group.

The timeline for an introduction of a bill is August 2013.
