Immigration Reform 2013 – New Immigration Law

Latino leaders announced that they will be “keeping a report card” on members of Congress during the debate surrounding immigration reform in 2013.  They indicated that they will mobilize their voters in support of legislators that are in favor of a comprehensive bill that includes a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Debate on the new immigration law is expected to begin soon after President Obama’s inauguration with a goal of having legislation passed by the summer.

Latino leaders indicated that “they were seeking a single comprehensive bill, rather than several bills addressing legalization for groups of illegal immigrants like young people or farmworkers.  They said they would insist on a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, rather than a temporary legal status that does not offer an eventual chance to naturalize.”
